Movie Picks for May 2011

Here are my picks for May…

Waiting for Superman (2010)
Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim reminds us that education “statistics” have names: Anthony, Francisco, Bianca, Daisy, and Emily, whose stories make up the engrossing WAITING FOR SUPERMAN. He follows a handful of promising kids through a system that inhibits, rather than encourages, academic growth. Are your children learning? Basically – NO. The public school system has become so mired in red tape and union guidelines that good teachers are never rewarded and bad teachers can’t even be fired!  Some schools have become “dropout factories” and “academic sinkholes”.  This is a very informative fim. If you’d like to find out more or to see how you can help, visit the film’s website here. There is hope for change. It’s possible. Together we can fix education.

The Nines
“Look for the nines.” This movie is made up of three different stories. Ryan Reynolds plays the lead character in all three stories. He’s a down on his luck TV actor, a reality TV show writer and a video game designer. All the stories tie together at the end. Reynolds is good in all three roles and you really have to stick with it to figure out what is going on. The same people in all three stories show up as different characters, you keep seeing the number 9 show up and it will keep you guessing until the end. It’s a little like David Lynch meets Lost. Stick with it and the ending, which is actually quite touching, will make sense. It is not what you’d expect. In a scene from the first story, the TV actor asks the questions many viewers will be asking early on. “Am I dead?” “Am in hell?” “Am I an purgatory” The answer to all those questions will be revealed at the end and it is probably not what you were thinking!

“In Addition…to the Entrée” Cover Design

Congratulations and all the best to Connie Hope and her book “In Addition…to the Entrée.” I designed the front and back covers for Connie. The book’s doing well and is full of great recipes, so if you want one click here. Tell her you saw it on this site.

Some Recent Projects

Gina’s Closet is a clothing store in Clifton Heights where you can buy, sell, trade, or consign brand name clothing. It caters to women, teens and girls ages 7 and up.  I helped them with a sign, and designed a 2-sided postcard for them…

MezzeppiThis was a character I drew for Sandy’s Steaks in NJ. Mezzeppi is a special “Hot” sauce that went on the steak sandwiches.

4LeggedFriendsThis was rejected by the client who wanted something more “realistic” and “corporate.”  I liked it. I thought the leash forming the heart was pretty
clever if I don’t say so myself.

CheesesteakLogosAnother cheesesteak guy for a chain in Florida.

StorksThis was a fun project. The above storks and the characters below are a series I drew for Steve and Susan at Sign-a-rama in Newtown Square, PA.  They spun off a little “lawn character” rental business from their sign shop called Grassy Greeting. If you need a sign or banner, give them a call. They’re nice people and easy to deal with.
